Thanks to Anne Cater of Random Things Tours for my place on the tour and to Headline and the author for my copy of the book. All opinions are honest and my own.
One year after Erica Spencer trips and falls down a flight of stairs at a lavish Halloween party, the residents of the exclusive gated community where she lived have comes to terms with her death and moved on with their lives.
Until one day, a post on the school’s website announces there will be a podcast to expose what really happened on the night of the accident. Six suspects are named, with the podcaster promising to reveal the murderer by the end of the series.
Everyone in this community has secrets to keep, and one of them is already a killer…
Having previously loved Jenny’s books I was thrilled to be invited to read this and be part of the tour.
It was like a nostalgic trip to Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives but made current and ramped up with podcasts.
This has everything , scandals, affairs, gossip mongering and a few red herrings to keep you on your toes.
The pace is fast moving and the characters although slightly confusing at first soon become easy to follow and are well rounded and believable.
Set in the gated community of Severn Oaks where they thought they were safe this is as much about the nature of pecking orders and how we all try to fit in . Trying to keep skeletons in the closet, judgemental gossiping neighbours and the masks we wear to keep up appearances even with people we consider friends.
I didn’t work out the “whodunnit ” as every time I thought I had it sussed another podcast revealed more information and a different choice of suspect. This was a really clever use of technology and it helped to show the gap between children and their parents.
If you loved Desperate Housewives I recommend you take a walk and meet the Severn Oaks six.
About the author
Jenny grew up in Shropshire thinking that authors were rock stars and that she needed to get a real job. After being made redundant she decided to write a book, then another, then another and at some point writing became her real job. Someone is Lying is her fifth book and she is now unemployable in any other field.
