Blog Tour – The Collective by Alison Gaylin

Thank you to Anne @RandomTTours for my place on the tour and to @orionbooks for my gifted paperback. All opinions are honest and my own.

How far would a mother go to right a wrong?

Camille Gardner is a grieving and angry mother who, fives years after her daughter’s death, is obsessed with the man she believes to be responsible.

Because Camille wants revenge.

Enter: the Collective.

A group of women who enact revenge on those who have taken their children.

But as Camille gets more involved in the group she must decide whether these women are the heroes or the villains.

And if she chooses wrong, will she ever get out alive?

My Review

This book sucked me right in. As a mother I felt Camille’s rage, her grief and her determination to seek justice for the death of her daughter.

No ordinary revenge thriller, this book is all about the feelings and the details. With every heartbeat it brings more empathy and compassion towards the victims and the mothers who cannot move on. While graphically depicting the crimes, the people behind them and the ways in which the mothers want them to suffer their last moments.

It made me contemplate what I would want. It is easy to say if anyone harmed a hair on my daughters heads what I would do. But given that opportunity would I take it? Especially if I thought I wouldn’t get caught as there is power in numbers. This is where “the collective” comes in.

It felt shady and sinister and also strangely therapeutic. At times I questioned her actions and also the culpability. Two wrongs may not make a right but when the legal justice path fails you and privilege seems to always win, will your judgement take a different stance?

With Camille only really having Luke left in her life, their friendship seemed to be the moral compass she would need. It also gave some more touching moments to what is a very dark story indeed.
